Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center | Albany, NY

Angerame Architects was selected to undertake an extensive renovation of the existing physical plant and 70,000 sq. ft. of new additions to transform a dated 1970s Skilled Nursing Facility into a state-of-the-art facility. The additions encompass the ends of each existing wing, creating a secure and safe interior courtyard for residents to enjoy. In addition, the connection of the new wings at the end of the existing wings allow for a continual thoroughfare throughout the enlarged unit.

The new dining rooms have high ceilings to allow for natural lighting of the space. Finishes, lighting fixtures, and appointments are selected to enhance a residential setting that is warm, inviting, and familiar to residents. Resident room design improves individual privacy and defines personal space. Each room includes a “European-style” bathroom to further promote privacy and bring a residential feel to the space.

Renovations and additions will include a complete redesign of the main lobby, administration area renovations, new central kitchen, new mechanical and electrical systems, addition of 130 private and semi-private resident rooms with European-style bathrooms, and updates to the existing resident wings. As well, the connecting links to the residential wing will be enlarged to provide new dining and country kitchens with adjacent lounges.

The design transforms the sterile image of the existing building, by creating a new lobby and entry Porte Cochere, which brings new life to a dated façade and instills a welcoming experience.
